Argentina’s President Javier Milei hosted Czech President Petr Pavel at the Casa Rosada on Tuesday, part of a visit aimed at strengthening political and economic ties between the two countries.
Pavel, a former NATO general whose presidential role is largely ceremonial, met Milei alongside their respective delegations, including Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and Czech presidential office chief Milan Vašina.
The meeting was the key moment in Pavel’s official visit to Buenos Aires, which combined high-level political dialogue with business and cultural engagements, including a stop at the CARI foreign policy think tank.
The leaders discussed cooperation in areas such as defence, energy, science and technology, while highlighting shared positions on major international issues, including support for Ukraine, according to a readout.
Pavel later told Czech media that the talks confirmed “a similar outlook on a number of key global issues” and emphasised the importance of translating diplomatic ties into concrete economic partnerships.
The major outcome of the visit was the signing of a long-awaited agreement to avoid double taxation, concluding two decades of negotiations. The deal is expected to facilitate investment flows and improve market access for Czech companies operating in Argentina.
Pavel, who travelled with a business delegation, also took part in a Czech-Argentine Business Forum while in Buenos Aires.
Beyond politics, Pavel engaged with the local Czech community and visited the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires, in the process becoming the first foreign head of state to tour its permanent exhibition.
Argentina and the Czech Republic have enjoyed diplomatic relations for more than a century, though top tier visits have been rare. Pavel’s trip follows Milei’s visit to Prague in 2024 and is seen as reinforcing bilateral engagement.
Pavel is set to continue his regional tour with a visit to Chile.
