Euphoric Milei predicts ‘another shock’ in Buenos Aires Province

Fresh off the back of City election win for his La Libertad Avanza party, President Javier Milei predicts a win in neighbouring Buenos Aires Province in September.

President Javier Milei said Monday that Manuel Adorni’s victory in the Buenos Aires City elections is La Libertad Avanza’s  “best result ever” and boldly predicted another “shock result” in neighbouring Buenos Aires Province in September.

“The election result is unappealable. We achieved our best result ever. For us, it’s a crucial stepping stone to move forward and paint the whole country violet,” he said in an interview with the A24 news channel.

Milei’s hand-picked candidate, Manuel Adorni, led the party slate to victory in Sunday’s City legislative elections, taking more than 30 percent of the vote.

In second was Peronist Leandro Santoro, on 27 percent, followed by PRO candidate Silvia Lospennato on 15.9 percent – a devastating result for the right-wing party, which had previously won 11 straight elections in its stronghold.

Euphoric in the wake of his party’s win, Milei revealed Monday that talks between his La Libertad Avanza party and the fellow right-wing PRO party over an alliance in the provincial election are “very advanced,” despite clashes between the two parties during the City campaign.

In the upcoming provincial elections, scheduled for September 7 in Argentina’s most populous district, “we’re going to deliver another shock result,” Milei boldly proclaimed.

He said that he had wanted PRO and La Libertad Avanza to align previously. “I had said we needed to go together everywhere – that made the [City] mayor [Jorge Macri] and his faction paranoid and fearful of certain sectors of the City, so they split the elections and that annoyed people,” explained Milei.

The President described Sunday's victory in the City as a “crucial stepping stone for a deeper political project to paint the whole country violet” – referring to the colour his party uses in every election.

Milei insisted that an agreement in the region is “progressing independently” of PRO chair Mauriciio Macri and that “many political figures are realising that PRO has become obsolete and is not capable of putting an end to Kirchnerism.”

“To everyone willing to embrace the ideas of liberty, we will welcome them with open arms, and any centre-right space will be included,” the head of state affirmed.
