Argentina votes against UN resolution on women and girls

Argentina the only country to vote against a UN draft resolution calling for prevention and elimination of digital violence against women and girls.

Argentina's government on Thursday was the only nation to vote against a United Nations draft resolution promoting the intensification of efforts to prevent and eliminate all forms of digital violence against women and girls.

President Javier Milei's administration represented the sole negative vote cast during Thursday’s UN General Assembly session, with 13 abstentions and 170 in favour.

Among the abstentions were countries including Russia, Belarus, Iran and Senegal.

According to reporting by CNN, Argentina's representative argued that the draft resolution contained ambiguous terms such as “hate speech,” “misinformation,” and “disinformation” that could be used “abusively” to restrict freedom of expression.

President Milei has been a strident critic of the United Nations, most notably the multilateral bodies Agenda 2030 sustainable development initiative.

A few days ago, Argentina was the only one of the 169 countries that voted against another UN draft resolution calling for the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples.

On Wednesday, Milei's new Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein ordered the entire Argentine delegation to withdraw from climate change talks at the COP29 conference taking place in Azerbaijan.
