Sergio Berni, Gerardo Morales test positive for coronavirus
News broke late Friday that Buenos Aires Province Security Minister Sergio Berni and Jujuy Province Governor Gerardo Morales have both tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Two more high-profile politicians in Argentina have confirmed that they had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Late Friday evening, sources close to Buenos Aires Province Security Minister Sergio Berni said that a swab taken from the outspoken politician had tested positive for Covid-19.
Berni has been in isolation since last Sunday, after it was confirmed that a “close collaborator” had been infected with the virus.
In quotes reported by La Nación, Berni confirmed the diagnosis and said he was “without any symptoms."
Buenos Aires Province is the nation's worst-hit region from the pandemic.
Minutes after news of Berni’s positive test came back, Jujuy Province Governor Gerardo Morales confirmed on social media that he too had tested positive.
In a post on Twitter, Morales said he was "asymptomatic” and “complying with isolation and all medical recommendations."
"I want to tell you that the diagnosis of Covid-19 positive has just been confirmed,” he wrote.
"At the moment that we are going through, I ask you not to relax. Let us continue strong, fighting the pandemic. Let's not lower our arms!" wrote the governor.
Jujuy, which has experienced an increase in cases over recent weeks, is now the province with the second-highest coronavirus tally, registering 4,128 cases and 108 deaths.
