6.0 magnitude earthquake shakes northwest of Argentina

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Jujuy Province in northwestern Argentina; No casualties or damage reported.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Argentina on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported, but so far no casualties or damage were reported. 

The tremor occurred at 07.01am local time (10H01 GMT) at a depth of 247 kilometres, according to the USGS. 

Its epicentre was located 57 km from Abra Pampa and 96 km from Humahuaca, two small towns in Jujuy Province, near the border with Chile and Bolivia.

Argentina's National Institute for Seismic Prevention (INPRES) recorded the quake at a lower magnitude of 5.7.

The quake was preceded by a small tremor of magnitude 4.4, at a depth of 210 km, at 03.27am local time (06:27 GMT).
