Marcelo Gallardo commits to River Plate, signing new four-year contract

Gallardo, who has led the Millionario since 2014, has led the club to seven titles during his spell in charge and has committed himself to another four seasons at the helm.

River Plate received a boost this week when coach Marcelo Gallardo signed a new contract with the club, renewing their association for another four years.

Gallardo, who has led the Millionario since 2014, has led the club to seven titles during his spell in charge and has committed himself to another four seasons at the helm.

“I’m happy, I’m very emotional. I just signed an agreement for four years, but for me that’s an anecdote. My link with River is life-long,” the Argentine coach said at a press conference with River Plate’s President Rodolfo D’Onofrio.

Despite a less-than-stellar league campaign this season – River currently sit 17th in the Superliga table, with four wins from 12 matches – the 41-year-old has delivered a series of trophies during his three-and-a-half years in charge, including the Copa Sudamericana (2014), Recopa Sudamericana (2015 and 2016), Copa Libertadores (2015), Suruga Bank Championship (2015) and Copa Argentina (2016 and 2017). “I feel good,” said Gallardo. “Over these three-and-a-half years I’ve lived with a lot of intensity and a lot of passion. I’ve learned a lot, it is not easy to be at the head of a club as important and demanding as River… but I feel like I’m at my best.”
