At first glance, Argentina appear to have a relatively straightforward path out of Group J at the 2026 World Cup.
Led by Lionel Messi, the Albiceleste arrive at the tournament – which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada – with 17 players remaining from their 2022 World Cup-winning squad.
Barring a major surprise, Argentina should finish top of the group. The battle for second spot is much more open, with Austria, Algeria and debutants Jordan offering very different profiles.
Austria appear to be the strongest collective side, while Algeria are relying on star power and their previous World Cup experience. Little-known Jordan enter the tournament under no pressure, making their first-ever appearance at the finals.

Argentina have a well-established identity, a reliable structure and the ambition of becoming the first back-to-back world champions since Brazil in Chile 1962.
Star player: Lionel Messi
At 38 years of age (he will turn 39 during the tournament), Messi is preparing for what will be his sixth and final World Cup. Captain, undisputed figurehead and emotional leader of the side, his playing time may be managed more carefully this time out, particularly in a Group J that does not appear especially demanding, but Messi remains the man for key moments.
ALGERIA

Manager: Vladimir Petković
Having gained World Cup experience during his time in charge of Switzerland, Petković is aiming to take Algeria back to the levels they reached at Brazil 2014. The team combines experienced players with a new generation raised in Europe, although defensive inconsistency remains their greatest challenge.
Star player: Riyad Mahrez
The veteran Al Ahli winger and former Manchester City star, now 35,remains the team's most influential performer. His creativity, set-piece delivery and ability to make an impact in tightly contested matches could prove decisive.
AUSTRIA

Under the guidance of the architect of gegenpressing, Austria have a clear identity, play with high intensity and have a squad that is tactically very well drilled. They were one of the most convincing European sides during qualifying and will be looking either to upset Argentina or capitalise on any slip-up.
Star player: David Alaba
The versatile Real Madrid player is the team's unquestioned leader both on and off the pitch. His experience, game intelligence and versatility are key assets as Austria target a place in the knockout rounds.
JORDAN

Making their World Cup debut, Jordan have made sustained progress in Asian football in recent years, highlighted by a historic runners-up finish at the 2023 Asian Cup. Despite a convincing qualification campaign, expectations are now. The side will look to excel through organisation and discipline.
Star player: Musa Al-Taamari
The Rennes winger is the team's most dangerous attacking player. Quick, direct and experienced, he will be Jordan's main offensive threat.
