Priest sentenced to 12 years in jail for three counts of sexual abuse

Rubén Agustín Rosa Torino, 67, sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Salta court for three counts of sexual abuse against victims following a six-week trial.

A priest in Salta has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following convictions for grave sexual abuse.

Father Rubén Agustín Rosa Torino, 67, was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Salta court earlier this month on three counts of sexual abuse against victims of both genders following a six-week trial.

In two of these cases – also involving a former novice priest and an ex-nun – which transpired between 2009 and 2012, the charges included the use of force.

When sentencing the deviant priest, Judges Maximiliano Troyano, Norma Beatriz Vera and Roberto Faustino Lezcano alerted the provincial penitentiary authorities to the need for “extreme measures to look after the health conditions of the convicted defendant,” including “psychological treatment, bearing in mind the nature of the actions for which he was convicted” as well as photographs and a genetic examination by the forensic molecular biology experts of the Departamento Técnico Científico del Cuerpo de Investigaciones Fiscales with the resulting genetic data inscribed in the national register.

Prosecutor Verónica Simesen de Bielke had requested a prison sentence of 22 years for the accused while defence lawyers Humberto Oliver and Fabio Núñez had called for his acquittal.
