President Javier Milei is adding another overseas trip to his agenda. On Tuesday, February 10, Argentina’s leader is due to visit the Mar-a-Lago complex, Donald Trump’s residence/resort in Florida, United States, to attend the Hispanic Prosperity Gala 2026.
It will be a business-heavy event and President Milei will be seeking a fresh photo with the man in the White House, although libertarian sources are unwilling to confirm if a meeting will take place.
On Friday morning, a group from the head of state’s inner circle confirmed Milei’s destination for next month. They said he would carry out an agenda during the day-long gathering of executives, politicians and celebrities. Organised by the Latino Wall Street web platform, the invitation is exclusive and aims to “highlight the contributions of the Hispanic community and strengthen strategic alliances.”
The La Libertad Avanza leader is expected to deliver a speech that will highlight the economic reforms implemented by his administration since he took office in December 2023.
Ruling party sources say the chances of a photo opportunity and a brief exchange between Trump and Milei are high. However, that is not enough to confirm that there will be another bilateral face-to-face meeting between the two leaders. The last time they met, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Milei signed Argentina’s accession as a founding member of Trump’s Board of Peace.
In the corridors of Balcarce 50, memories are still fresh of what happened on April 1, 2025. That was the day when Gerardo Werthein, then Argentina’s foreign minister, casually announced in media interviews that Milei would receive an award alongside Donald Trump at the Palm Beach residence owned by the Republican leader.
“The President will receive an award for his work promoting the values of freedom and conservatism, and alongside him Donald Trump will also be honoured. We expect a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, the president’s home,” said the businessman-turned-official at the time.
His words, however, did not match reality. The economist travelled with his sister, Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei and Economy Minister Luis ‘Toto’ Caputo, but did not meet Trump. A pointless trip.
That false start triggered a wave of criticism from within the governing coalition against Werthein for a lack of predictability and exposed him as the main person responsible for the failure. It also marked a rupture in Werthein’s relationship with presidential adviser Santiago Caputo.
Now acting cautiously, figures within LLA speak only of the “possibility” of a meeting with the White House chief and say the trip will serve to consolidate the broad alignment between the two countries. Inside the Casa Rosada, some maintain that the libertarian leader will also use his stay to fine-tune elements of the trade agreement with the United States, an understanding that has seen “steady” progress and is on track.
However, diplomatic sources urge caution, noting that since the framework agreement was announced in November last year there have been no concrete definitions and no implementation date. Further technical understandings are still required, along with a review of the small print and, above all, parliamentary approval of the trade pact.
It is worth recalling that the initial text on the proposed deal, published by the White House’s X account, included references to market openings, the removal of trade tariffs, labour commitments and compliance with pharmaceutical and anti-piracy standards, among other points.
One more detail: Milei will again set foot on US soil, this time in New York, to take part in “Argentina Week,” which runs March 9 to 11 in Manhattan. Authorities will seek to position the country as an attractive destination for global investors.
Milei’s attendance was confirmed last Saturday by Argentina’s ambassador to the United States, Alejandro ‘Alec’ Oxenford, who hailed the state of bilateral relations and the ties between their leaders.
