Some robbers shot and took US$21,500 from a cousin and two employees of the supermarket of the family of Antonela Roccuzzo, wife of football star Lionel Messi, in Rosario on Wednesday, according to police sources.
The robbers, in another vehicle, shot at least once at the car where Roccuzzo’s relative and two employees of the supermarket were moving the money to deposit into a bank in town.
The shot frightened the woman and employees, all three left unharmed, who handed over two bags with eight million pesos (US$21,500 at the official exchange rate) to the thiefs. The criminals fled and as of Wednesday afternoon they remained at large.
On March 2, two people on a motorcycle had shot at the facade of the supermarket of the Roccuzzo family, an incident which the mayor of Rosario, Pablo Javkin, then linked with police forces who disagreed with his administration.
“The supermarket has private security. We’re waiting for the results of fingerprints and security cameras” to progress with the investigation of the theft, said police chief Diego Santamarina about the violent robbery to local journalists.
Rosario is the most violent city in Argentina, with a homicide rate which in 2022 reached 22.1 of every 100,000 inhabitants, five times the national rate, most of them related to drug dealing, according to official data.
Messi and his family usually spend the holidays in Rosario, his hometown from where he emigrated in his teens to Barcelona, where he achieved world fame as a footballer.
