In this week’s Times: Mar del Plata and Neo-Nazis

Plus the Pope in Latin America, all you need to know about the future US ambassador to Argentina and tributes to the late heroic British Navy surgeon Rick Jolly and El Gráfico.

In this Saturday’s edition of the Buenos Aires Times, we take a trip to Mar del Plata with Jayson McNamara, who looks into the dark acts that have cast a shadow over the nation’s most famous seaside resort.

In March, a federal court in the Mar del Plata will put eight men in the dock over a string of violent attacks against the LGBT and Bolivian communities and a wave of anti-Semitic vandalism. As McNamara finds out by talking to victims, human rights groups and prosecutors, it will be the first time that a gang with explicit neo-Nazi traits will face trial in Argentina.

Keeping with Argentine news, we’ll also wrap up the week’s developments in the government’s bid for labour reform, deal with Labour Minister Jorge Triaca’s controversial week in the headlines and address the government’s collective-bargaining decree which will impact upon wage talks with teachers unions. We’ll also bring you up to date with some of the biggest economic headlines.

With Argentine-born pontiff Pope Francis conducting a tour of Chile and Peru, we’ll also ask why the leader of the Catholic Church has once again snubbed his homeland, as well as covering his week in the two Latin American nations, including today’s controversial comments regarding Bishop Juan Barros.

Elsewhere, Jacob Meschke will tell you everything you need to know about Edward Prado, US President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next US ambassador to Argentina.

Isabella Soto, meanwhile, brings us the emotional story of late Royal Navy surgeon Rick Jolly, who sadly passed away on January 13. The only serviceman to have been honoured by both sides of the Malvinas conflict, Jolly’s story is a testament to his character and willingness to look beyond the colour of a serviceman’s uniform.

In Culture and Sports, we are lucky to feature two strong pieces from Dan Edwards. The first is an ode to the late El Gráfico. The legendary sporting magazine ended its print run this week just shy of its centenary. In his second contribution to this week’s edition, Edwards also meets the Polish photographer who flew across the Atlantic to capture the beauty, agony and ecstasy of Argentine football.

To round off, we’ll bring you the fearsome foursome of Agustino Fontevecchia, James Neilson, Michael Soltys and Andrew Graham-Yooll, who’ll cover all things Argentina in their incisive weekly op-ed columns.

Put it altogether and you’ve got this week’s edition of the Buenos Aires Times, number 21.
