Worst day of pandemic to date: 35,543 infections and 745 deaths

Argentina's Covid-19 second wave hit new heights on Tuesday, as the Health Ministry confirmed a daily record of 35,543 new infections and 745 fatalities in the past 24 hours. 

The figures represent the worst single-day figures for deaths and confirmed cases since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Record infection numbers were registered in Buenos Aires City (3,465), Córdoba (4,074) and Santa Fe Province (3,302). Buenos Aires Province , which traditionally has the highest numbers, recorded 14,593 confirmed cases.

In total, 3,371,508 people in Argentina have now been infected with Covid-19 since last March, with a death toll of 71,771.

The Health Ministry also confirmed a sharp rise in the number of individuals admitted to intensive care units (ICUs), which rose to 5,813. Bed occupancy in these wards stands at 72.2 percent nationwide and 76.2 percent in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA).

The stark data will renew concerns over the progress of the virus in Argentina. Existing restrictions to tackle the spread of the virus are due to expire on May 21 and the Casa Rosada is currently consulting with experts over its new move.
