Argentina loses to Germany 3-0 in Davis Cup trouncing

Schwartzman and Pella lost in individual matches as did the González-Mayer duo in the doubles match during the third day of the revamped tennis competition.

Germany claimed victory against Argentina on Wednesday with a score of 3-0 in their favour, dimming Argentina’s hopes of continuing into the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup.

In the first individual match of elimination, Germany’s Philipp Khohlschreiber beat Argentina’s Guido Pella 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Pella began the match with the same force he brought yesterday against Chile, but Khohlschreiber, ranked 79th in the world, managed to take the game in the two following sets.

“I was more aggressive,” said Kohlschreiber after the match. “I played good tennis in the second and third set.”

In the second individual match, Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman pushed Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff to the limit in the nearly two-hour-long game, but the game was decided in the tiebreaker of the second set with Struff emerging victorious 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

“We’ve made a good tie, but there’s one game left, each point counts and we still have to play against Chile tomorrow [Thursday],” said Struff after his game.

Chile, the third team in Group C, lost 3-0 against Argentina on Tuesday and will face off with Germany on Thursday to complete the Group C competition.

In the three-hour-long doubles match which closed the Argentina-Germany cross, the Argentine players Máximo González and Leonardo Mayer continued the losing streak, being defeated by the German duo Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies 6-7 (7/4), 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (20/18).
