US President Donald Trump on Monday congratulated his Argentine ally and counterpart Javier Milei on his party's runaway victory in midterm elections.
"Congratulations to President Javier Milei on his Landslide Victory in Argentina. He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the People of Argentina (sic)," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform during an Asia tour.
In subsequent statements to journalists, Trump said that Milei "was a big winner and had a lot of help from us. He had a lot of help, I gave him support, very strong support."
The United States granted Argentina US$20 billion in financial aid through a currency swap and the purchase of Argentine pesos.
Trump commented that Milei's party's margin of victory was "really unexpected" and that "people thought it would be difficult to win, but not only did he win, he won by a lot."
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also praised Milei for a "very successful midterm election."
"Argentina is a vital ally in Latin America. These results are a clear example that the Trump Administration policy of Peace through Economic Strength is working (sic)," he wrote.
"We look forward to continued steps toward economic freedom that will attract private sector investment and job creators, bringing prosperity to the Argentine people.
"Under President Trump's leadership, the relationship between the United States and Argentina has never been stronger. Latin America is on its way to a bright economic future," concluded Bessent.
Milei thanks Bessent
In turn, President Javier Milei thanked Bessent for his congratulatory message following La Libertad Avanza's victory in the national legislative elections, stating that Washington's assistance was essential.
In a post on his X account, minutes before giving an interview to the A24 news channel, the president said: "Thank you, Secretary Scott Bessent, for your kind words and unwavering support."
"This resounding victory for La Libertad Avanza is a triumph of the Argentine people's unyielding spirit for freedom, prosperity, and the defeat of the socialist scourge that has plagued our nation for far too long," he remarked in a rare post on X
"Your administration's bold vision of achieving peace through economic strength resonates deeply with our own crusade for freedom," added Argentina's head of state.
"Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the unbreakable bond between the United States and Argentina will pave the way for unprecedented investment, innovation and growth, unleashing Latin America's full potential as a model of free enterprise," Milei celebrated.
Finally, he sent a message of unity between the two nations, stating: "Together, we will build a future where chainsaws cut through bureaucracy, not dreams. MAGA!"
