Night of the Museums returns to Buenos Aires for 15th edition

A new edition of La Noche de los Museos takes place this weekend in the capital. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, more than 280 cultural centres will be participating, with activities catering to all ages and interests.

This Saturday, November 10, beginning at 8pm, more than 280 public and private cultural centres in the capital will throw open their doors to porteños as part of the latest edition of Night of the Museums (Noche de los Museos) festival.

This will be the 15th anniversary of the event, which takes place in Buenos Aires every year. Each incarnation has attracted more and more participants and, as a result, this year more than 900 volunteers, transit agents and security personnel will be assisting visitors, as they explore some of the capital's finest cultural outposts – and all for free too.

Apart from the permanent exhibitions offered at the participating institutions, there will be additional exhibitions centred around themes such as the role of women, taking care of the environment, social integration, gender diversity and innovation.

But with so much on show, what should we look out for?

In terms of what the ideal tour, Buenos Aires City Culture Minister Enrique Avogadro suggests "the most interesting is to let you be surprised."

"There are museums in all our neighbourhoods and they are places that are not only open during the Night at the Museums but all year round. Residents can be proud to have these institutions in their neighborhoods," he added.

Avogadro recommends visitors "choose one institution as your starting point and start your tour from there, choosing two or three neighbourhoods to pass through. There will be several buses to take and those who will be participating can take a free bus pass to travel until 3am in the morning."

The free bus pass can be downloaded from the Night of the Museums website, where you can also find the list of bus lines that are participating.

Additionally, the website includes a search feature to separate the different institutions by its barrio and a complete itinerary for Saturday. On the same page you can also download an app where you will have access to the planned programming.

The classics

There are always museums that stand out and are preferred by visitors,

– Among them is Usina del Arte, which will be inaugurating its "The Art of Bad Behaviour" exhibition, a retrospective of the feminist artist collective Guerrilla Girls. There will also be activities all night long.

– The Museo de Arte Moderno will present its exhibitions "The daring march of the Modern collection," "Nicolas Mastracchio-Pulse" and a video installation by Toia Bonino.

– The Museo Casa Carlos Gardel will host, starting at 10pm, "Phantom Milonga," – a dance that can be live streamed on mobile phones too.

– The Museo de Artes Plásticas Eduardo Sívori will be inviting children to participate in a workshop centred on art and recyclables, while renowned hair stylists create "futuristic hairstyles" for visitors.

– The highlight at the Museo del Humor is "Urban Mutations," an exhibition featured 17 contemporary artists who reinterpret elements of Buenos Aires and La Plata.

– At the Palacio Noel del Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernández Blanco visitors will celebrate, in collaboration with the Mexican Embassy in Argentina, the Dia de los Muertos with projections and an installation entitled "The Altar of the Dead 2018."

– The Museo de Esculturas Luis Perlotti will host a performance by gymnast Locadia Circus.

Other prominent exhibitions will take place at Recoleta Cultural Center, MALBA, Remembrance Park, National Museum of Fine Arts and several others. Entries to all museums and participating sites will be free.
