Argentine musician Chico Novarro, writer of such classics as 'Algo Contigo' and 'Cuenta conmigo,' died on Friday at the age of 88.

The Santa Fe singer's death was confirmed in a post on social media by his family.

“My dad’s gone, a beautiful and beloved person," wrote Novarro's son Pablo Novak on Twitter, the social network that has been renamed X.

Born as Bernardo Mitnik, Novarro was born in Santa Fe on September 4, 1934 and grew up in the neighbouring province of Córdoba.

After debuting in Chile as a tango crooner, he started getting famous in the early 1960s when he took part in Club del Clan, a popular Argentine pop music television programme that was broadcast in several Latin American countries.

He then went solo, finding fame, though Novarro was also a composer and arranger.

He recorded some 30 albums of boleros, cumbia and tango and wrote over 700 songs.

His classics include 'Algo contigo,' 'Cómo,' 'Arráncame la vida,' 'Cuenta conmigo,' 'El camaleón,' 'El orangután,' and 'Un sábado más.'

Some of his lyrics were covered by Mexican trio Los Panchos, Cuba's Olga Guillot, Brazilian Maria Creuza, Puerto Rican singer Luis Miguel, in addition to Argentines Javier Calamaro and Vicentico.

Chico Novarro also acted in some 10 Argentine comedy films.
