Film legend Jane Fonda to promote Argentine human rights doc ‘Norita’ at Los Angeles screening

Academy Award-winner Jane Fonda to present screening of documentary detailing life of Madres de Plaza de Mayo co-founder and human rights icon Nora Cortiñas at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.

Hollywood star Jane Fonda will present a special screening of Norita, the film celebrating the life of Argentine human rights activist Nora Cortiñas, at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles on Monday, October 27.

It will be Fonda's first public appearance in support of the documentary she helped bring to life as an executive producer.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Jayson McNamara, Norita tells the story of Nora Cortiñas, the late co-founder of Argentina’s Mothers of Plaza de Mayo movement, who spent more than four decades demanding justice for her son and other victims of the country’s 1976-1983 military dictatorship. The film traces her transformation from a middle-class housewife into one of Latin America’s most recognisable human rights icons.

Fonda’s involvement in the project underscores her long-standing commitment to social causes. The Academy Award winner, who has campaigned on issues ranging from the Vietnam War to climate action, quietly joined the Norita team as an executive producer during post-production. Monday’s event will be the first time she publicly lends her voice to the film.

“This is very special,” the filmmakers said in a statement confirming Fonda’s participation. “She was an executive producer on the project but this is the first time she’s going to be publicly joining us.”

The screening will include a discussion with McNamara, executive producer Bárbara Muschietti, and producer Sarah Schoellkopf following the screening.

Norita premiered in Argentina earlier last year and has since toured the country with more than 50 grassroots screenings, sparking renewed debate on democracy and state violence. In her lifetime, Cortiñas became a moral reference point for generations of activists – often seen wearing her signature white headscarf and, later, a green one in support of legal abortion rights.

Tickets for the Los Angeles event are available through the Museum of Tolerance website.
