Under-fire Adorni faces marathon grilling from opposition in Congress debut

Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni faces defining Congress test; First report in Chamber of Deputies set to stretch six hours, President Milei set to attend; Opposition likely to pose queries over under-fire official's wealth and assets.

Under-pressure Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni will present his first management report to the Chamber of Deputies tomorrow, in a highly anticipated Congress clash expected to focus more on his private affairs than public policy.

Adorni, 46, is facing intense scrutiny from politicians, the press and the public. He is under investigation for alleged illicit enrichment over property purchases not declared in his asset filings. He has also come under fire over luxury travel, the use of private jets and official trips, including questions about how those journeys were financed.

But not all the headlines have been negative. Last week, federal judge Daniel Rafecas cleared Adorni of wrongdoing regarding his wife’s presence aboard the presidential plane to New York last month for the ‘Argentina Week’ business roadshow, clearing a first hurdle.

Despite the mounting controversy, Adorni is set to be backed by several senior La Libertad Avanza figures in Congress – including his boss. President Javier Milei said last week he would attend the session to back his official

“Yes, of course I’ll go and support Manuel – I’ll go and listen to my Cabinet Chief,” the President said in an interview on a streaming channel. “Manuel will give the answers that correspond. The courts are working, deadlines are being met, and we are very calm.”

President Javier Milei said last week in an interview that he would attend the session in support.  “Yes, of course I’ll go and support Manuel – I’ll go and listen to my Cabinet Chief,” President MIlei said in an interview on a streaming channel. “Manuel will give the answers that correspond. The courts are working, deadlines are being met, and we are very calm.”

Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei, along with several ministers, will also be present in the congressional galleries for Wednesday’s appearance, according to Casa Rosada sources.

Opposition blocs have prepared a grilling for the Cabinet Chief, with some 5,000 questions reportedly submitted. Adorni is nevertheless expected to sidestep queries related to his personal finances while the matter remains under judicial investigation.

He will appear before the lower house for the first time since taking office as coordinating minister, a role created in Argentina’s 1994 constitutional reform.

But not all the headlines have been negative. Last week, federal judge Daniel Rafecas cleared Adorni of wrongdoing regarding his wife’s presence aboard the presidential plane to New York last month for the ‘Argentina Week’ business roadshow.

Government insiders say he will seek to project firmness, avoiding the hesitations seen in his last press conference. He is also expected to adopt the confrontational tone that has characterised his recent posts on X when responding to criticism.

Adorni is due to take the floor at 10.30am. He will begin an opening address of around one hour, expected to highlight the government’s achievements, particularly on the economic front.

The question-and-answer session that follows is expected to last roughly six hours. Smaller blocs will go first, making up an initial 50-minute segment, followed by Innovación Federal (11 minutes), Unidos (20 minutes) and Fuerzas del Cambio (20 minutes).

After the Cabinet Chief’s 20-minute response slot, it will be the turn of Unión por la Patria. The Peronist bloc, led by Santa Fe deputy Germán Martínez, will have 68 minutes for its questions.

Following Adorni’s replies, the closing segment will be handled by the La Libertad Avanza bloc.

Expectations are high, with some congressional sources describing it as the most anticipated Cabinet Chief’s address since the role was created.

Adorni, who rose to prominence as Milei’s presidential spokesperson, succeeded Guillermo Francos as Cabinet Chief in October 2025.

He won last May’s Buenos Aires City elections for La Libertad Avanza and was elected as a City legislator, but never took up the seat, opting instead to remain in government.
