The polls are in... no Argentina wants to spend New Year’s Eve with a politician

With the holiday season in full swing, consulting firm Giacobbe y Asociados decided to ask Argentines which politician they’d like to invite to their New Year’s Eve festivities. The answer, unsurprisingly, was none of them.

Argentines have a pretty toxic relationship with politicians, marked by mistrust and questioning. This is clear – just look at the results of the last election: outsider Javier Milei stormed to the Presidency with his chainsaw promises, vowing to sweep away the political “caste.” In the run-off, the majority of voters then turned their backs and promptly voted ‘el Loco’ into office.

Humour is a national pastime, always present in times of crisis, as well as every season. With the end of the year approaching, and Christmas and New Year with it, one pollster decided to consult Argentines to see if their opinion of local politicians had changed over the past year.

With a nod to the holiday season, they asked respondents: Which politician would you invite to spend New Year at your house?

The answers were far from surprising. Most of those surveyed responded that they would not invite anyone, though Milei topped the rest of the ranking as a preferred participant to share a cider or pan dulce with on New Year's.

In descending order – and a considerable distance behind – were former presidents Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Mauricio Macri, followed by Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof.

Further down the list are Vice-Preisdent Victoria Villarruel, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, social leader and lawyer Juan Grabois, PRO Senator Luis Juez and Unión por la Patria deputy Leandro Santoro. Veteran Peronist Guillermo Moreno and Milei’s Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni also made the list.

The study also probed the popularity rating of Milei, the leader of La Libertad Avanza, indicating that it remained fairly stable throughout the year and in recent months has registered an increase.

According to this latest measurement, Milei has a positive evaluation of 49.7 percent, with 40.8 percent negative and a regular image ranking of nine percent.
