Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy arrived in Argentina on Monday for an official visit that will last two day. It is the first time in 11 years that a Spanish Prime Minister has visited the country.
Bilateral investment and the ongoing free trade talks between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur trading blocs will be high on the agenda for Rajoy and his Argentine counterpart President Mauricio Macri.
The meeting between Rajoy and Macri would be “like two lovers finding one another again”, Macri told Spanish newspaper ABC on Sunday. The President expressed strong expectations that the Rajoy government would assist Argentina in breaking through to European markets.
For his part, Rajoy told La Nación that “Argentina has regained its judicial security and I want to encourage (Spanish) businesses to invest (in Argentina) and accompany reforms”.
“It is something that cannot happen again,” he said, indirectly reflecting on Spain’s relationship with Argentina under former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. “Too many things unite us”.
Rajoy arrived in Buenos Aires with several dozen Spanish business leaders including executives of the gaming and leisure firm CIRSA; freeway, infrasturcute and telecommunications management firm Albertis; the consultancy Indra; and insurance company Mapfre.
The trip would “be the final part of the process of normalisation in bilateral relations”, the Argentine Ambassador to Spain Ramón Puerta said.
