Relatives of each of the 44 families with loved-ones on board the missing ARA San Juan submarine on Monday protested through the coastal city of Mar del Plata to demand that the Navy resume its rescue efforts.
If the Navy “took them out” to sea on the missing submarine “then they also have to bring them back”, said Marcela Moyano, the wife of officer Hernán Rodríguez who has been missing along with his fellow crew members since November 15.
Relatives have spoken out firmly against a tragedy they claim is the consequence of alleged corruption and incompetence within the Navy's hierarchy.
But their anger has also turned toward the government.
“The president (Mauricio Macri) must hear us and see the pain we’re experiencing”, Moyano added. “He must come here”.
The ARA San Juan crisis is causing a headache for the national government, particularly as the demands of the families of the missing officers gain ground in public opinion.
The Navy formally ended the rescue efforts last Thursday, though both the Navy and national government insist that the search for the vessel will continue until all possibilities of finding it are exhausted.
Macri's advisors are preparing a video message about the tragedy to be released in the coming days, sources told Clarín, after the use of a national broadcast was discarded.
