Political leaders and officials mourn death of Hipólito Yrigoyen mayor

Hipólito Yrigoyen mayor Jorge Cortés died in a car accident Wednesday after a meeting of PJ officials with Axel Kicillof.

Political leaders and officials from across the political spectrum expressed condolences over the tragic death of Hipólito Yrigoyen Mayor Jorge Cortés, who died Wednesday afternoon in a car accident after a meeting of provincial mayors with candidate for governor Axel Kicillof.

“We received the terrible news of the death of our comrade Jorge Cortés,” Kicillof wrote on his Twitter. “What enormous sadness. Our condolences to his family, friends, the neighbors of Hipólito Yrigoyen and all his comrades.”

Kicillof, a former economy minister who ran an overwhelming victory in this month’s primary election, suspended his campaign events on Thursday and Friday to honor Cortes death.

The gubernatorial candidate's running-mate and current La Matanza mayor, Verónica Magario, also said: “A strong hug to the family of our dear mayor of Hipólito Yrigoyen, Jorge Cortes, after his tragic and unexpected death while returning to a meeting in Avellaneda.”

Current Buenos Aires Province Governor, María Eugenia Vidal, tweeted: “I lament the passing of Jorge Cortés. I pass the greatest feeling to his family and loved ones.”

Sad news,” said provincial national deputy candidate Sergio Massa. “My condolences to the family and friend of Hipólito Yrigoyen mayor, Jorge Cortés. May he rest in peace.”

Cortés died while returning from an event with Justice Party mayors and Kicillof. Police said his car stalled and went off the road in the roundabout No. 6 highway in San Vicente. Two other passengers in the car, including Cortes municipal secretary, were sent to the hospital after the crash.
