Milei meets OpenAI boss, chats with Trudeau before speech at Stanford

Javier Milei met with the creator of ChatGTP, Sam Altman, and discussed Artificial Intelligence in San Francisco on Tuesday; President also speaks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

President Javier Milei told one of the world’s top leaders on Artificial Intelligence about “the enormous possibilities offered by a libertarian Argentina” as his tour of the United States continues.

Milei, 53, made the remark after spending time with the entrepreneur behind ChatGTP, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Argentina’s leader said on social media that the “wonderful” meeting opened up many possibilities.

“Here is a photo with Sam Altman after a wonderful meeting about AI and the enormous possibilities of a libertarian Argentina...!!!,” Milei wrote on his X account.

He accompanied the message with a photo of the two of them giving a thumbs-up sign.

The meeting, which lasted around an hour, was one of the President's first activities in California, where he arrived on Tuesday morning (midday Buenos Aires time).

Milei was accompanied by his travelling delegation, which includes Economy Minister Luis Caputo, presidential chief-of-staff Karina Milei, Demian Reibel, the head of Milei’s council of economic advisors, and Gerardo Werthein, Argentina’s Ambassador to the United States.

Canada calling

Soon after arriving in the United States, Milei shared a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The duo updated each other on previous discussion points, including trade relations between the two countries, as well as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

According to reports, firms from the North American country are exploring the possibility of investing in Argentina’s mining sector.

Milei and his Canadian counterpart will meet face-to-face next month at the G7 summit in Italy, to which he was invited by the host, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.

Tech focus

President Milei, who departs the United States on Friday, has a busy schedule for the coming days.

Later on Wednesday he will give a 45-minute lecture at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, before meeting with the institution’s rector, Richard Saller, and former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

Afterwards, he is due to spend time with professors and economic policy experts from the Hoover Institution.

Deepening his ties with the giants of the tech world, Milei will meet with Google CEO Sundar Pichai at 3.30pm local time, followed by Apple CEO Timothy Cook at 6pm.

His day will end with a meeting of 30 entrepreneurs and investors linked to Artificial Intelligence.

On Thursday, Milei has on his agenda a meeting with start-up and AI entrepreneurs, will give a speech at the Pacific Summit, organised by the Bay Area Council, and finally meet with the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg.

Departing the United States on Friday, Milei will fly back to Argentina after making a stopover at El Salvador, where he is due to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s second term in office.
