Argentina's Milei alters Internet rules to make way for Elon Musk’s Starlink

President is still fine-tuning his relationship with the tycoon, but clearly he is keen on forging closer ties.

President Javier Milei announced on Wednesday a set of reforms by decree to de-regulate the economy. And he name-checked one company in particular – Elon's Musk satellite Internet service provider Starlink.

Among the 30 measures which the head of state announced by national broadcast was the de-regulation of satellite Internet services, in order to “allow for competition of foreign companies, such as Starlink,."

Starlink is the satellite network run by tycoon Elon Musk, with whom Milei has a good relationship. Dys before the presidential inauguration, Milei acknowledged on social networks that he had had shared a “great conversation” with Musk.

Back then, Milei publicly thanked the businessman for his support on “X” (formerly Twitter, also owned by Musk): “I thanked him for defending the ideas of freedom and for supporting our work, especially taking into account all of which he represents as an icon for freedom worldwide."

The head of state then dangled the possibility of a visit by Musk in 2024: “We stayed in touch for him to visit Argentina next year and to keep on bonding and working together."

In late November, Diana Mondino had also disclosed signs of an approach by the brand-new Government to the billionaire.

The foreign minister answered the message of an X user who had posted the photo of a map of South America stating that Starlink, Musk’s company offering satellite broadband, would be available in this area starting in 2024.

“I’m going out of my mind, Starlink in Argentina?” the author of the post wondered. “We’re working on it,: responded the official, hinting that negotiations with Musk had already begun.

Starlink was the only private company mentioned during the president’s speech on a national broadcast that lasted little over 15 minutes.
