Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof received the first dose of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine against Covid-19 on Tuesday morning, as the government's mass immunisation campaign got underway.
Minutes after receiving the jab, the Peronist leader celebrated the moment on Twitter, hailing it as "the beginning of the end of the pandemic in Argentina."
Posting a photo of the moment on the social network, he he was "proud to have provided the shoulder."
Kicillof received the dose at La Plata's San Martín hospital, as the vaccination campaign got underway early this morning. He is the first governor to be immunised with the Russian vaccine, which began arriving in Argentina on Christmas Eve.
Minutes after the governor was vaccinated, the province's Deputy Health Minister Nicolás Kreplak also received the shot.
As well as the government officials, a number of healthcare professionals also began receiving vaccinations. Nurse Juliana Torquati, who works at the hospital in La Plata, was the first to receive the shot.
