Johnson considering homage to fallen Malvinas soldiers during BA visit: reports

Johnson will visit Buenos Aires for the G20 Foreign Affairs Ministers Summit to be held May 20 to 21 at Argentina’s Foreign Ministry.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is evaluating the possibility of paying homage in Buenos Aires to fallen soldiers of the 1982 Malvinas/Falkland Islands War between Britain and Argentina.

Johnson will visit Buenos Aires for the G20 Foreign Affairs Ministers Summit to be held May 20 to 21 at Argentina’s Foreign Ministry.

The Foreign Secretary’s tight schedule remains open to modifications but he is contemplating the idea, diplomatic sources told La Nación newspaper.

Anglo-Argentine relations are enjoying a renaissance of sorts following two years of cooperation in a number of areas including, and particularly, the humanitarian mission to identity Argentine soldiers buried near Darwin.

Johnson’s gesture would come a little over one month after relatives of fallen soldiers travelled to the Islands to place plaques on the tombs of their loved ones.

LAVROV-POMPEO

The G20 Foreign Ministers Summit is likely to be one the most relevant in the leadup to the November heads of state summit in Buenos Aires.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he remained open to the idea of meeting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo while in Buenos Aires.

“Everything is possible,” Lavrov told Interfax news agency.
