Ecuador's Congress strips Fernández de Kirchner of medal

Eighty-six of the 137 lawmakers in Ecuador's Lower House voted in favour of the measure to strip Fernández de Kirchner of the Manuela Sáenz medal, which she received during her regional ally Rafael Correa's time as president.

Ecuador's National Assembly has stripped former Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of an important national medial the Andean country bestowed on her in 2016.

Fernández de Kirchner, who is currently a senator, is being investigated in Argentina for alleged corruption.

"It is not possible for people who are traitors to public faith and their own ideology to enjoy important decorations" like the Manuela Sáenz medal, a statement by lawmakers who voted in favour of the measure read.

A statue of her Fernández de Kirchner's late husband, former president Néstor Kirchner, was removed from a square in Quito three weeks ago, and there are plans to remove a statue of Kirchner from a square in front of the UNASUR headquarters in the same city.

Eighty-six of the 137 lawmakers in Ecuador's Lower House voted in favour of the measure to strip Fernández de Kirchner of the Manuela Sáenz medal, which she received during her regional ally Rafael Correa's time as president.

Correa split from the Alianza País coalition after his former colleague Lenín Moreno took office in 2017.

Moreno and Correa have been engaged in a power struggle since then, prompting a crisis within the ruling party which led to it losing its parliamentary majority. Moreno's congressional bloc forms a majority with the support of parties opposed to Correa.
