Corrientes security minister resigns post amid missing child case

Buenaventura Duarte has tendered his resignation to Corrientes Province Governor Gustavo Valdés, with national deputy Alfredo Vallejos set to replace him.

The investigation of the disappearance of missing five-year-old Loan Danilo Peña has taken a new twist after Buenaventura Duarte, the security minister in Corrientes Province, announced he is resigning from his position.

Duarte tendered his resignation to Governor Gustavo Valdés as attempts to find the missing child – who went missing one month ago – continue.

Valdés has already selected Duarte's replacement – national deputy Alfredo Vallejos will soon be appointed. He will be sworn-in on Friday, July 15, at the provincial seat of government.

Vallejos is a member of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) and has only took office as a lawmaker last year. He was due to hold his seat until 2027.

It has not been confirmed if he will resign his seat, but give his new role, he is expected to do so.

News of the resignation broke on the same day lawyer Fernando Burlando announced he will denounce the Corrientes provincial government for "aggravated cover up" in court, challenging the administration on its handling of Loan's disappearance.

“Where will I find a person in Corrientes who dares investigate such a situation in the province, where senators, governors and police officials are involved?” alleged Burlando in an appearance on television.

The lawyer declared “the situation is unmanageable...” and said there are “different reasons” why he and his team decided to file the report.

“It’s at least aggravated coverup, it’s no small matter. Where do they want me to report this if courts don’t react?

"When it comes to Valdés and officials, courts don’t react, can’t they see that?,” he alleged.
