Argentina’s race to the November 19 run-off is officially underway.
The Legislative Assembly, consisting of both houses of Congress, on Thursday officially proclaimed the two tickets which will contest the second round of the election: Sergio Massa of the Unión Por la Patria (UxP) and Javier Milei of La Libertad Avanza (LLA).
The session was headed by Vice-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who read out the results of the October 22 election before proclaiming the two run-off tickets, who from that moment had five days to ratify their participation as per Article 96 of the Constitution.
The last time the Legislative Assembly held such a session was held was in 2015 to ratify the run-off contest between Peronist Daniel Scioli and PRO founder Mauricio Macri, won by the latter.
The official results of the October 22 presidential elections were also given on Thursday as follows:
Massa: 9,853,492 votes or 35.98 percent; Milei: 8,034,990 votes or 29.34 percent; Patricia Bullrich (Juntos por el Cambio) 6,379,023 votes or 23.29 percent; Juan Schiaretti (Hacemos por Nuestro País): 1,802,068 votes or 6.58 percent and Myriam Bregman (Frente de Izquierda y de Trabajadores-Unidad): 722,061 votes or 2.64 percent.
The official turnout figure was 77.04 percent.
