Buenos Aires and its suburbs were engulfed in a blanket of smoke and the smell of burning on Monday due to a fire in neighbouring Uruguay.

Emblematic buildings such as the Casa Rosada, the seat of government, and monuments like the Obelisk were difficult to make out from less than 100 metres away, with the smoke drifting across the capital’s neighbourhoods.

"In the coastal areas of the Río de la Plata there is also smoke from a fire in the southwest of Uruguay. Caution when driving! Visibility may be less than one kilometre," the National Meteorological Service reported on social media.

The fire occurred on Saturday in fields in the Uruguayan department of San José and the wind is blowing the smoke towards Buenos Aires, Argentine meteorologist Cindy Fernández said on Twitter on Sunday.
