Argentina's government announces voluntary military service scheme

New scheme will be for youths aged between 18 and 28 with "training in concrete areas," according to government.

Argentina’s government has announced the return of voluntary military service for youths aged between 18 and 28 with training in "concrete areas."

The news was confirmed by Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni at his daily press conference to accompany Army Day last Thursday.

"The lofty values which always characterised the Armed Forces should be inculcated – valour, discipline and love of our nation," stated Adorni. “Voluntary Military Service will encourage and certify the volunteers in concrete skills like cooking, workshop mechanics or guard duty.”

The Defence Ministry and Human Capital Ministry, respectively headed by Luis Petri and Sandra Pettovello, will coordinate the implementation of Voluntary Military Service announced at the start of the year for youngsters of age who “desire to serve the nation.”

“From now on educational and programmes will function so that every volunteer can complete their compulsory education,” pointed out Adorni, affirming along similar lines: “Whoever serves the country should also have the tools to do so with dignity when their [military] service ends.”

“With the objective of boosting the response to emergencies, the weeks of initial military instruction will be increased and broadened to cover defence tasks in emergencies and responding to catastrophes such as floods or fires,” he detailed.

“All who feel the sacred flame of representing our [armed] forces and serving the fatherland are welcome,” he concluded.

Via his X account, Petri declared: “In the government of President Javier Milei we are working on the present of our youth to improve their future. From the Defence Ministry we will improve voluntary military service with integral and modern training and together with minister Pettovello and her Human Capital portfolio we will offer every possibility for the complete education of our soldiers.”

He specified the requisites for joining up as "being an Argentine citizen by birth or by choice who is single and who has passed seventh grade [in school], an examination for psychological and physical fitness and the admission course.”

The service will guarantee "training and education to function within the National Defence System with coverage of social security contributions and life insurance and certification of the job acquired during service. The years of Voluntary Military Service will count as years contributing to a pension.”
