Milei preps decree for special Congress sessions, labour reform top priority

President Javier Milei has signed a decree that will summon Argentina’s lawmakers for special Congress sessions throughout February, with the libertarian leader setting his labour reform bill as top priority. 

According to reports in local media, Milei signed the decree over the weekend before departing for an overseas trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he will address the world’s political and business elite.

The decree convenes Congress for extraordinary sessions, formalising a legislative period that will run from February 2 to 27. 

The government’s central focus during the sessions will be labour reform, Milei’s flagship initiative for his second term. Debate on the push will begin in the Senate on February 10.

Several other items are also on Milei’s legislative wishlist. His La Libertad Avanza party and its congressional allies will push for changes to Argentina’s National Glacier Protection Law.

In a speech in Asunción on Saturday, he also told the leaders of the European Union and the Mercosur that he would fast-track a bill seeking the ratification of the sweeping free-trade agreement that was signed in the Paraguayan capital to great fanfare.
