Barely an hour and a half before the first leg of the biggest Superclásico in decades, officials have confirmed that the crunch Copa Libertadores clash between Boca Juniors and River Plate at La Bombanera had been suspended.

The game will now be played tomorrow, on Sunday, at 4pm.

A torrential downpour, coupled with strong winds, lashed the capital from around 7am morning, drenching Buenos Aires and its La Boca neighbourhood in particular, with streets near Boca's iconic stadium flooded.

The decision was taken at around 3.30pm local time this afternoon.

Representatives from both clubs, as well as regional governing body CONMEBOL inspected the pitch, which had patches of water all over it. Originally the plan was to suspend the match until 7pm, in the hope the rain would calm and the pitch would drain, but Chilean referee Roberto Tobar and his team eventually decided the pitch was in no condition for a match to be paid.

The second leg is due to take place at River's Monumental stadium on November 24.

The game is not 100 percent certain to go ahead tomorrow, however. The weather forecast, for tomorrow afternoon at 4pm, says "scattered thunderstorms."
