Japanese tourist found dead in Quebrada de Humahuaca after 4-day search

Toshiko Kikegawa was discovered by police in a canyon after an apparent fall from a hiking trail.

A Japanese tourist, who reportedly disappeared while visiting the famous Quebrada de Humahuaca valley in Argentina’s north, was found dead on Saturday by police.

Police officials said the woman died after an apparent fall into a canyon off the tourist trail.

The woman, Toshiko Kikegawa, was last seen one week ago before leaving a hostel in the picturesque village of Purmamarca. She had paid for four days of lodging and left her belongings in her room.

Below leaving she said she was going to visit various sites in the region.

After two nights without news, the owner of the hostel issued a missing persons report to the police on Wednesday.

After several days of searching by police, dogs and rescue forces, her body found on a tourist circuit near the Paseo de los Colorados. The woman "apparently fell” while walking trails of the circuit, police sources told local media.

La Quebrada de Humahuaca, in Jujuy, is one of the largest tourist attractions in Argentina and in 2003 was declared World Heritage Site.

Last year, Jujuy had one million tourists from 73 different countries, with an annual average of 800,000 visitors, according to the provincial Tourism Observatory.
