President Javier Milei spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties, following the Argentine leader’s 36-hour visit to Washington.

“The Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Argentine President Javier Milei,” the US State Department said in a statement published on social media, adding that the two leaders had “reaffirmed the strength of the partnership between the United States and Argentina."

During the conversation, they discussed opportunities to deepen bilateral trade, expand transparent investment and promote shared prosperity and security across the Western Hemisphere, according to a readout of the call.

The US State Department said Rubio and Milei had reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together to achieve concrete results benefiting both nations.

A separate statement from Milei's office said the two had discussed further strengthening their strategic alliance. It added that their cooperation was based on shared values, including the defence of freedom, respect for democratic institutions and the conviction that free trade and private enterprise were the engines of development and prosperity.

The statement stressed the importance of consolidating regional stability to strengthen investor confidence and enable Argentina to integrate more fully into global value chains, in line with the government’s economic liberalisation and modernisation agenda.

The call came ahead of a visit to Argentina next week by two senior officials from US President Donald Trump’s administration: Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Juan Pablo Segura, the State Department’s Under Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Milei’s Washington visit tis week included meetings with investors, activities at the US Chamber of Commerce and an event against anti-Semitism.
