EU ambassador to Argentina highlights shared values on Europe Day
EU Ambassador Amador Sánchez Rico leads Europe Day celebrations in Buenos Aires, highlighting shared values between European Union and Argentina.
More than 500 guests attended celebrations at the EU ambassador’s residence in Belgrano on Tuesday as Europe Day was marked in style.
EU Ambassador Amador Sánchez Rico led the festivities, which included an enjoyable trivia quiz for guests that raised awareness of bloc’s work in Argentina and its cooperation with the government. Eight lucky participants walked away with a prize, with the winner claiming a pair of flights to Madrid, donated by Spain’s flagship airline Iberia.
In a speech to those gathered – which included political leaders, media personalities and a large number of the diplomatic corps – Sánchez Rico talked of Argentina and the EU’s shared values, while highlighting the union’s expansion and impact on Europe since its formal establishment in 1993.
"We celebrate a trajectory of enlargement, economic integration, solidarity within and outside the EU, freedoms and respect for human rights and, above all, a peace process within our borders," declared the ambassador.
Sánchez Rico also underlined the importance of ongoing talks over the EU-Mercosur free-trade deal, describing it as “more than a trade agreement” which could deliver “job opportunities and economic growth” for both of the interested parties.
Along with high praise for his host nation, there was also a pointed reference to the war on Ukraine, which the envoy said had left Europe “more united” than ever. The envoy underlined that the war-torn nation must be allowed to choose its own future in the face of Russian aggression.
The Orquesta de Los Barrios, conducted by maestro Néstor Tedesco, performed the anthems of Argentina and the European Union, with renowned Argentinean baritone Leonardo López Linares leading the singing
