U20 World Cup: Argentina top group after thrashing New Zealand 5-0
Glorious goal from Luka Romero is the pick of the bunch as Argentina thrash New Zealand 5-0 to finish top of Group A at the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Argentina thrashed New Zealand 5-0 to finish top of Group A at the FIFA U20 World Cup on Friday in their third and final group stage match of the tournament.
The Albiceleste, who had already secured their passage into the last 16, rounded off a comfortable qualification round with a comprehensive win over the Oceanic side. Goals from Ignacio Maestro Puch (13th minute), Gino Infantino (16th), Luka Romero (34th), Brian Aguirre (50th, penalty) and Aléjo Veliz (86th).
The highlight of the match was a spectacular goal from Romero, who plays in Italy with Lazio. The attacking midfielder started a run in his own half, evading two opponents and advancing into the opposition half at full speed. Smashing a left-footed strike into the corner from 25 metres, it was undoubtedly one of the tournament’s best goals to date.
Argentina won Group A with nine points and will be joined in the last 16 by Uzbekistan (4 points and and goal difference of plus 1), while New Zealand (4 and minus 4) must wait to see if they finish as one of the best third-placed teams. Guatemala, on zero points, bow out without having scored a goal.
