Presidential handover formally confirmed by Congress

Justicialist Party chairman José Luis Gioja read out the full and final results of the October 27 elections, which saw 48.24 percent of voters back the Frente de Todos leader and 40.28 percent opt for President Mauricio Macri – both results were warmly applauded by the legislators of all parties, thus marking a smooth transition (something of an exception given these past few weeks of regional turmoil.)

The applause grew to a crescendo when the Fernández-Fernández ticket was formally proclaimed as Argentina’s next president and vice-president by outgoing Vice-President Gabriela Michetti chairing the session. La Cámpora militants sang their famous “Vamos a volver” song, while others sang the Peronist March before the session began.

Senator Fernández de Kirchner herself was absent, as was outgoing Senator Miguel Angel Pichetto, Macri’s running-mate.
