One dead, at least 13 injured in accident at Ezeiza airport
Airport operator confirms fatality after incident at building site, where new terminal is being constructed for Argentina's major international airport.
One worker has been killed and at least 13 have been left injured after scaffolding collapsed at a building site at the Ezeiza international airport, Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 confirmed yesterday.
"The emergency plan was executed on site, evacuating all of the operators. It is important to clarify that all those involved in the accident have already been treated," the firm added.
The incident took place where construction workers are building a new terminal for the Ministro Pistarini International Airport, in the town of Ezeiza, Buenos Aires Province. Ezeiza, as the airport is most commonly known, is Argentina's main international terminal.
"At 16.20 [hrs] an accident was recorded during work at the Ezeiza airport," Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 said, saying the incident had "caused the death of one worker, José Bulacio, foreman; another 13 were injured."
The firm added that "airport health attended them [the injured] initially and then they were transferred to the Ezeiza hospital."
Firefighters, police officers, paramedics and rescue dogs were involved in the search for the injured.
According to local news reports, workers said they had noticed alleged "irregularities" in the site, with one union grouping suggesting workers had complained about security failures. The UOCRA union said "the work had complaints for breaches of security measures."
Flight operations, both in terms of departures and arrivals, were unaffected by the accident.
