National electoral map: Where Massa recovered the presidential race

Unión por la Patria candidate Sergio Massa’s dramatic comeback in last Sunday’s presidential election has given Argentina’s political map a new paint job.

The ruling coalition hopeful managed to reverse results in a number of key provinces, increasing his victory count from five in the August 13 PASO primaries to 13 in Sunday’s general election.

Indicating the contrasting fortunes of election night, Javier Milei’s La Libertad Avanza dropped from 16 wins in the primaries to 10 on Sunday – still an impressive tally for a party created only two years ago. 

Underlining a disappointing night for the opposition Juntos por el Cambio coalition, the centre-right grouping won only one provincial race, down from three in the primaries.

Massa managed to retain the five provinces he had won in the PASO blue (Buenos Aires, Santiago del Estero, Catamarca, Chaco and Formosa), while adding victories in eight others: the provinces of Tucumán, La Rioja, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, La Pampa, Río Negro, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.

Milei managed to hold PASO triumphs in Córdoba, Santa Fe, Mendoza, Misiones, Jujuy, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, Neuquén and Chubu and keep those 10 provinces painted purple. He failed, however, to win any new districts and dropped to second place in six regions.

Juntos por el Cambio took three provinces in the August primaries – Buenos Aires City, Entre Ríos and Corrientes – but it emerged from the general elections victorious in only one region: the nation’s capital, its bastion.
