Infections top 2,100 as officials confirm seven new deaths in Argentina

Seven new fatalities from Covid-19 have been recorded in Argentina over the last 24 hours, lifting the death toll from the novel coronavirus to 90, the government has confirmed.

The Health Ministry also confirmed Saturday evening that 167 individuals had been infected with the novel coronavirus. A total of 2,142 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 in the country.

Of the latest fatalities, at least four passed away in Buenos Aires Province (three men aged 47, 62, 79 and a woman aged 82), with deaths also recorded in Buenos Aires City (two males, aged 69 and 71) and finally, late Saturday night, officials in Córdoba confirmed the passing of a 79-year-old man, lifting the death toll to 90.

Government officials also offered a new breakdown of how the cases were contracted, saying that 38 percent are now considered "imported," with 33 percent a result of patients coming into close contact with individuals who had the virus. Around 14 percent are a result of community transmission, with the remainder still under investigation.

The majority of the 'new' infections were recorded in Buenos Aires City (46 confirmed cases) and Buenos Aires Province (37), with a notable amount of positive results also returned in Córdoba (32) and Río Negro (23).

Speaking Saturday to the TN news channel, Health Minister Ginés González García said the situation was "better than what the most optimistic had predicted."

"We are doing things well or less badly than other countries. But this is day by day, and we do not have time for successes," the minister warned.
