Former president Carlos Menem was released from hospital on Friday after being admitted for a second time in less than a month for pneumonia, family members said.

Menem, who turned 90 on Thursday, was admitted to intensive care at the Los Arcos private clinic in Buenos Aires on Thursday suffering breathing difficulties.

His breathing had improved sufficiently to allow him to be taken home, but a diabetic condition "needs to be closely monitored," local media quoted family members as saying.

Memem's relatives added they did not want the former statesman to remain in the clinic and risk exposure to the coronavirus, the reports said.

The senator reportedly tested negative for the coronavirus.

President between 1989-1999, Menem had been discharged only on Monday after two weeks in hospital receiving treatment for severe pneumonia.
