Argentine NGO records 94 femicides in first six months of year

Feminist organisation Mujeres de la Matria Latinoamericana (Mumalá) said this week that 94 femicides were registered in the first six months of 2021 – the equivalent to a woman being murdered every 38 hours. 

The NGO also recorded 143 violent deaths of women, transvestites and transgender individuals in Argentina over the same period. These figures – spanning a period from January 1 to May 30, 2021 – work out to one death every 25 hours.

Mumala's study said that their May report “reveals the most extreme forms of gender violence that occurred" during 2021 in Argentina. The study was produced from the analysis and monitoring of digital and graphic media throughout the country, search engines, national alert system, monitoring of organisations, portals specialised in gender, feminism, human rights, and/or police and forensics.

A total of 95 children and adolescents were left without a mother as a result of femicides, the organisation added.

Heading the list of affected regions was Buenos Aires Province, with a total of 32 femicides.  Córdoba, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán were next with nine murders, followed by Buenos Aires City with seven.

In turn, the report revealed that the provinces with the highest rate of femicides, in relation to the number of inhabitants, are Santiago del Estero, Neuquén, La Rioja, Formosa and Tucumán.

Argentina has a national rate of 0.35 femicides per 100,000 women, according to the NGO.
