Stranger than fiction...

Argentina’s Milei plans charity courtroom play with ‘voluptuous blondes’

Javier Milei plans to put on a theatrical production featuring a mock trial of capitalism and “voluptuous blondes”; Play to raise money for state children’s hospital that his government has defunded could be performed at the Berlin Wall, says President.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei says he plans to star in a theatrical production in which capitalism will be put on trial – with him as its main defender.

In a lengthy appearance on a streaming channel, Milei said the play – for now titled Juicio al capitalismo (“Trial of Capitalism”) – would be a mock courtroom drama in which he will defend the free market.

According to the self-proclaimed “anarcho capitalist,” it will also star a number of “voluptuous blondes” dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

The play, still in development, is being promoted as a charity performance to raise funds for the Garrahan Children’s Hospital, claimed Milei.

The head of state made the announcement during a fawning interview on Misa, a popular streaming show hosted by Daniel ‘Gordo Dan’ Parisini, a YouTuber and libertarian influencer who is one of the President’s main defenders online.

During the six-hour appearance, the President shocked those in the studio by revealing his plans for the play, in which he will serve as the lead counsel for capitalism. Comedian Diego Sucalesca will play the prosecutor, a character named “Yakuza,” added Milei. A judge will also feature in the courtroom-style setting.

“My voluptuous blondes will be there to defend me,” Milei said smiling. “They’ll be dressed as the Statue of Liberty and everything!”

The La Libertad Avanza leader insisted the initiative is “for a good cause”, with proceeds going to renowned Hospital Garrahan, one of Argentina’s leading public hospitals for children.

However, the choice of beneficiary has not gone unnoticed – Milei’s government has imposed severe budget cuts across all levels of government, including healthcare and notably the hospital, which has seen staff dismissed and a key social work residency programme that supported vulnerable children and families shuttered.

While the idea raised eyebrows among local political commentators, this would not be Milei’s first time on stage.

In 2019, before entering formal politics, he appeared in El consultorio de Milei ("Milei’s Consulting Room"), a comedic theatre piece based on mock therapy sessions exploring Argentina’s economic history.

In 2024, he presented one of his books at an event at Buenos Aires City’s Luna Park stadium, during which he performed a song with a band of libertarian friends.

The President gave no date for the new play’s premiere and conceded that it isn’t finished.

However, he is already planning ahead for where it will be performed.

“We’re also working on getting permission to stage it at the Berlin Wall,” Milei told the streaming programme, leaving even his interviewers – and those watching – stunned.

Whether the Berlin Wall venue is a genuine goal or simply a flourish of presidential showmanship remains unclear. Same goes for the play itself, which could never be mentioned again.

Either way, the boundaries between spectacle and government continue to blur.
