President Mauricio Macri put in a 10-minute telephone call to US President Donald Trump Monday morning, a conversation the Pink House described as “positive”.
Macri is keen to shore up international support for his government’s decision to turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a line of financing aimed at supporting the country’s plummeting currency.
The call comes after Treasury Minister Nicolás Dujovne last week travelled to Washington to meet with IMF officials.
He also met Thursday with US Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs David Malpass, who “reiterated strong support for the Macri administration’s market-oriented reform programme”.
Treasury said in a statement that he welcomed the talks with the IMF. US support is key since it holds veto power in the IMF.
Argentine government officials have not said how much they are requesting, and a final deal could take at least a month, some suggest.
