Submarine disappears off Argentine coast

The submarine went missing off the coast of Chubut province on Wednesday November 15, 2017. The Navy denied reports that radio equipment onboard had caught fire. Forty-four officers were on board.

Argentina’s Navy is in crisis mode this morning as it was revealed the submarine ARA San Juan has been missing since Wednesday off the coast of Chubut province.

The submarine, with 44 officers on board, had been carrying out routine activities near the city of Comodoro Rivadavia when it lost contact with its base, the Navy reported.

The Todo Noticias news channel reported that a faulty radio caused a fire onboard, but the Navy denied this.

Family members of those on board have travelled the Mar del Plata naval base to await news about their loved ones.

The Navy is focusing its search off the coast of the small tourist city of Puerto Madryn. The Trelew and Mar del Plata bases are leading the rescue mission.
