A group of “pro-life” organisations in Argentina says it has collected over 400,000 signatures to petition against a bill to decriminalise elective abortion, which the country's Lower House will vote on next Wednesday.
The signatures were received at Congress on Tuesday by national lawmakers who are opposed to abortion: David Schlereth, Gisela Scaglia, Eduardo Cáceres, Javier Pretto, Lucas Incicco, Carmen Polledo, Jorge Enríquez, Miriam Boyadjian, and Cornelia Schmidt- Liermann.

The Lower House will vote on June 13 on a bill to legalise elective abortion without judicial authorisation in the first 14 weeks of a pregnancy.
Most observers believe it will successfully pass the Lower House but will struggle in the Senate.
“We are very happy about the energy and commitment of millions of Argentines across the country who are speaking out in favour of both lives”, said congressman David Schlereth (PRO).

For his part, president of the +VIDA organisation Raúl Bagnasco said the petition was “a result of the commitment of a people who, by wide majority, reject the decriminalisation (of abortion)”.
“We have over 1,200 pro-life organisations in our country,” he noted.
The petition arrived just days after a 70,000-signature-strong petition in favour of the bill that would decriminalise elective abortion.
